The Uchara Mahotsavam & Laksharchana 2026 at Kuzhiyam Thekkekkara Sree Durga Devi Temple in Kollam is one of the most anticipated religious events in the region attracting devotees from across Kerala and beyond. This annual festival is a vibrant celebration of faith, devotion and traditional Kerala temple rituals dedicated to Goddess Durga.
The festival spans several days during which the temple comes alive with devotional fervor, cultural programs and spiritual activities that highlight the rich heritage of Kerala’s temple festivals.
The rituals begin early in the morning with Palliyunarthal, the ceremonial awakening of the deity followed by Abhishekam and Malar Nivedyam where devotees offer flowers and sacred items to seek the blessings of the goddess.
One of the key rituals, the Ashtadravya Mahaganapathi Homam is performed to invoke the divine presence and ensure the smooth conduct of the festival. Community participation is an integral part of the celebrations with Samoohaneeranjanam and Laksharchana where large numbers of devotees chant mantras collectively creating an atmosphere of deep spiritual energy.
Throughout the festival, traditional Kerala art forms such as classical dances, devotional music and cultural performances are showcased adding to the festive spirit. Evening rituals include Mahadeeparadhana, Poomoodal and Maha Bhagavathi Seva where elaborate offerings and prayers are made to the deity. Devotees also participate by offering grains and other items symbolizing their personal devotion and surrender to the goddess for prosperity, good health and relief from difficulties.
