Rohini Mahotsavam at Kundara Sree Indilayappan Mahadevar Temple is one of the most spiritually vibrant and culturally rich annual celebrations in the region. Dedicated to Lord Shankaranarayana, a unique combined form of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, the festival reflects the deep-rooted devotional traditions of Kundara and the surrounding areas of Kollam.
The temple known for its serene atmosphere and strong ritualistic heritage becomes a center of divine energy and community participation during this grand celebration.
The festival begins with the sacred Thrikodiyettu marking the formal commencement of the festivities. Each day is filled with elaborate tantric rituals, Vedic chanting, special homams, abhishekams and traditional poojas performed under the guidance of the temple Thantri and priests. Devotees gather in large numbers to witness the sacred ceremonies, offer prayers and participate in various offerings such as Pongala, Palpayasam and special nivedyams dedicated to the deity.
A distinctive feature of Rohini Mahotsavam is the Dasavathara Chandanacharthu where different incarnations of Lord Mahavishnu are ceremonially represented and adorned with sandal paste symbolizing divine manifestations and cosmic protection. The temple premises resonate with devotional music, Sopana Sangeetham, bhajans and classical art performances including Bharatanatyam and Kathaprasangam creating a harmonious blend of spirituality and culture.
The highlight of the festival is the grand Aarattu procession accompanied by traditional Kerala temple elements such as caparisoned elephants, decorated floats, chenda melam, nadaswaram, Theyyam performances and the majestic Nedumkuthira. The ceremonial reception of the sacred Thidambu further enhances the spiritual grandeur of the occasion.
