The Kumbha Thiruvathira Mahotsavam celebrated at Kalkulathu Sree Sankaranarayana Swami Temple, Kollam is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant festivals in the region, attracting devotees from across Kerala. This annual festival, held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February–March), marks a period of devotion, cultural expression and community participation centered around the worship of Lord Sankaranarayana. The mornings of the festival are often marked by the Harinam Keerthanam where devotees sing devotional hymns while circumambulating the temple creating a serene and devotional atmosphere.

A highlight of the festival is the Thiruvathira procession and the Thanganki Ghoshayathra where the majestic temple elephant adorned in golden ornaments leads a vibrant procession accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles, Panchavadyam, Chenda melam and elaborately decorated floats. Streets along the procession route are beautifully illuminated with lamps and flower decorations creating a festive spectacle that delights devotees and visitors alike. Cultural performances including Kathakali, classical music recitals and traditional dance programs are an integral part of the festival reflecting the artistic heritage of Kerala. Special offerings such as Annaprasadam, Deepa Aradhana and devotional singing sessions further enhance the spiritual experience. The festival concludes with the Aarattu and a ceremonial procession signifying the end of the auspicious period and the blessings of Lord Sankaranarayana on all participants.
