The Prathishta Varshikam and Kumbham Makayiram Mahotsavam at Sri Madankavu Mahadevar Temple in Kollam is one of the most revered and eagerly awaited festivals in the region. This festival celebrates the sanctity of the temple and the divine presence of Lord Shiva attracting devotees from Kollam and neighboring districts.
The festivities begin with elaborate rituals that honor the deity, invoking blessings for health, prosperity and spiritual well being.
The celebrations feature a series of traditional rituals including Abhishekam, Nirmalya Darshan, Ganapathi Homam, and the powerful Maha Mrityunjaya Homam, performed under the guidance of the chief priest. Devotees participate with great devotion, offering prayers and seeking divine grace during these sacred ceremonies. Early morning rituals are followed by Usha Pooja, Bhagavatha Parayanam and other Vedic recitations creating an atmosphere of spiritual serenity and devotion throughout the temple premises.
One of the highlights of the festival is the Kumbham Makayiram Mahotsavam celebrated with grandeur from February 24 to 26 featuring traditional cultural programs such as Kaikottikali, Chendamelam and processions like the Chamaya Vilakku. These events are accompanied by devotional music, dance performances and ceremonial lamp procession blending spirituality with vibrant cultural expressions.
The festival also emphasizes community participation and service with offerings and prasadam distributed to devotees.
