Punartham Mahotsavam at Kochu Koonambaikulam Sree Durga Devi Temple in Kollam is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant annual festivals celebrated with deep devotion and community participation. Dedicated to Goddess Durga, the temple becomes a center of divine energy during this auspicious period drawing devotees from nearby regions and beyond.
The festival reflects the rich cultural and ritualistic traditions of Kerala, blending sacred ceremonies with artistic expressions.
The celebrations begin with the ceremonial flag hoisting marking the commencement of the festivities. Each day is filled with a series of traditional rituals such as Abhishekam, Usha Pooja, Ucha Pooja and Athazha Pooja performed with strict adherence to temple customs. Special offerings like Ashtadravya Maha Ganapathi Homam, Navakam, Panchagavya Pooja and various Kalasa Poojas are conducted to invoke divine blessings for prosperity, health and well being.
One of the highlights of the festival is the Sarvaishwarya Deepa Pradakshinam where devotees participate with lighted lamps symbolizing the removal of darkness and the arrival of prosperity. Annadanam is organized on multiple days reflecting the temple’s spirit of sharing and compassion. Devotional recitations like Bhagavata Parayanam enhance the spiritual ambiance while special poojas dedicated to various deities add depth to the rituals.
The festival is also enriched with cultural programs such as Kaikottikali, classical dance performances, bhajans and musical concerts showcasing Kerala’s traditional art forms. The grand Kettukazhcha with its colorful displays and processions creates a festive atmosphere that captivates devotees and visitors alike.
The concluding rituals including the sacred Aarattu and ceremonial processions signify purification and divine grace.
