Karavaloor Thiruvathira at the Peedika Bhagavathi Temple is one of the most important annual temple festivals celebrated in the Karavaloor region of Kollam. Dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi, the temple is a revered spiritual center where devotees gather to seek the blessings of the divine mother.
During the festival period, the temple premises become a hub of spiritual activity and cultural celebration. Each day begins early in the morning with sacred temple rituals such as Palli Unarthal, Abhishekam, Ushapooja and Ganapathi Homam followed by devotional singing and scriptural recitations like Bhagavatha Parayanam. These rituals are conducted according to traditional temple customs under the guidance of the temple priests and Thantri creating an atmosphere filled with devotion and spiritual energy.
One of the most significant highlights of the festival is the community Pongala offering where women devotees prepare a special offering to the goddess as a symbol of devotion and gratitude. The festival also features various traditional art forms and performances that are an integral part of Kerala temple culture. Classical performances such as Kathakali, devotional music concerts, dance programs and cultural gatherings attract devotees and art lovers alike.
Evenings during the festival are particularly vibrant with Deeparadhana and Deepakkazhcha where hundreds of lamps illuminate the temple surroundings. Cultural programs, folk performances, bhajans and music shows are conducted providing spiritual as well as artistic experiences for visitors. Traditional rituals such as Kalamezhuthu and Pattu along with devotional group performances further enrich the celebrations.
Another major attraction of the festival is the grand temple procession which includes beautifully decorated elephants, traditional percussion ensembles and various folk art performances. The procession reflects the grandeur and ceremonial splendor typical of Kerala temple festivals. Devotees participate enthusiastically, offering prayers and witnessing the divine presence of the goddess during the ceremonial procession.
