The Kaniyapoyika Meenabharani Thirunal Mahotsavam at Puthoor Kaniyapoyika Sree Bhagavathi Temple, Kollam is one of the most celebrated and revered festivals in the region, attracting devotees from across Kerala and neighboring states. This annual festival is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi, the fierce yet benevolent mother deity of the temple who is worshipped for her power, protection and blessings.
The festival is marked by a perfect blend of religious rituals, traditional art forms and cultural programs reflecting the rich heritage of Kerala’s temple traditions.
During the festival, the temple premises are decorated elaborately with flowers, lamps and ceremonial paraphernalia creating a divine and vibrant atmosphere. Devotees participate in various sacred rituals including Palliyunarthal, Nirmalyam, Usha Pooja, Ashtadravya Ganapathi Homam and Bhagavatha Parayanam which are performed with devotion and precision by temple priests and volunteers.
One of the highlights of the festival is the traditional Panchavadyam, a percussion ensemble that fills the temple grounds with rhythmic energy and Thottam Pattu, a ritualistic song performance narrating the stories of the goddess.
The festival also includes spectacular processions known as Chuttu Varavu and Kettukazhcha featuring beautifully decorated effigies, structures and artistic displays that captivate both devotees and visitors. Evening rituals such as Sandhya Seva and Deepa Aradhana illuminate the temple with thousands of lamps creating a mesmerizing visual experience. Additionally, performances of folk arts, Kaikottikali and devotional bhajans encourage community participation and reinforce the spiritual vibrancy of the event.
