Kumbha Thiruvathira Mahotsavam is one of the most important annual festivals celebrated at Kalarivathukkal Sree Mahadevar Temple located at Valathungal in Kollam district, Kerala. This temple dedicated to Lord Shiva holds a significant place in the spiritual and cultural life of the region and the festival draws devotees from nearby villages and distant places alike.
Observed during the Malayalam month of Kumbham, the festival is deeply rooted in Shaivite traditions and Kerala temple customs. The temple atmosphere during this period is filled with devotion, discipline and sacred energy, as rituals are performed strictly according to traditional tantric and temple practices. The festivities begin with ceremonial rituals that mark the spiritual awakening of the temple followed by a series of offerings, poojas and cultural observances.
A major highlight of the festival is Thrikodiyettu which formally announces the commencement of the Mahotsavam. From that day onwards, the temple becomes a vibrant center of devotion with daily rituals, special poojas and processions. Thalappoli, a traditional offering procession accompanied by lamps, music and rhythmic chants adds grandeur and visual splendor to the celebrations reflecting Kerala’s rich temple heritage.
Maha Shivaratri observed during the festival period holds special significance at the temple. Devotees observe fasting, night long prayers, abhishekam and special offerings to Lord Mahadeva seeking blessings for spiritual growth, peace and prosperity. The concluding day, Kumbha Thiruvathira, is considered highly auspicious and is dedicated to elaborate rituals and celebrations associated with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
