The Kumba Bharani Mahotsavam at Elikkattoor Sree Durga Devi Temple, Kollam is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant festivals in the region drawing devotees from near and far to witness and participate in its grand celebrations.
This festival is dedicated to the worship of Sree Durga Devi, the divine mother and protector who is revered as the guardian of her devotees and the embodiment of supreme power. The Mahotsavam is marked by a series of elaborate rituals, traditional poojas, and devotional offerings, all performed under the guidance of the temple priest to uphold the sanctity and spiritual significance of the temple traditions.
The festival begins with the ceremonial opening of the temple, followed by the Abhishekam, the sacred bathing of the deity with holy waters and auspicious substances. This is accompanied by Bhajans, Ashtapadi recitations and Ganapathi Homams creating an atmosphere of devotion and serenity. Devotees offer Ponkal, a ritualistic offering of rice symbolizing gratitude and devotion to the goddess.
The temple compound and surrounding areas are beautifully decorated with lamps, flowers and traditional motifs enhancing the spiritual ambiance of the celebrations.
