Chittumala Pongala is one of the most revered festivals celebrated at the Chittumala Sree Durga Devi Temple in Kollam, a sacred sanctuary where devotees gather to seek the blessings of the Supreme Mother, Sree Durga Devi.
According to Hindu belief, Sree Durga Devi embodies the universal mother representing the powers of will, action and knowledge through her three primary aspects—Maha Saraswati, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Kali. These divine forms guide devotees toward righteousness, prosperity and spiritual wisdom, while also serving as protectors who remove fear, alleviate suffering and empower devotees with strength and abundance.
The Chittumala Sree Durga Devi Temple, nestled on Chittumala Kunnu and surrounded by fertile fields is considered the presiding shrine of the Desinganadu region. The temple is a vibrant center of devotion where the Goddess’s benevolent presence is invoked through elaborate rituals, prayers and cultural programs.
The Pongala festival in particular is a remarkable celebration that brings together hundreds of devotees especially women who prepare offerings in the form of sweet rice dishes symbolizing their devotion and gratitude to the Goddess.
The festival spans several days of sacred ceremonies and traditional temple rituals designed to energize the divine presence within the shrine. Devotional music, Harinam Kirtanam, Kalamezhuthu, Thalappoli, Annadanam and various cultural performances highlight the festival making it both a spiritual and cultural extravaganza. The festival fosters community spirit encourages collective participation and preserves the rich heritage of temple arts, dance and music in the region.
