Chithira Mahotsavam at Palathara Sree Durga Bhagavathy Temple, Kollam is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant festivals in Kerala, celebrated with grandeur and devotion. The festival honors Goddess Durga Bhagavathy, the presiding deity of the temple and brings together devotees from all over the region to participate in its diverse rituals, cultural programs and devotional offerings.
The festival is marked by a series of elaborate religious ceremonies that highlight Kerala’s traditional temple practices. Devotees witness Abhishekam, Ganapathi Homam and Panchagavya Kalash Abhishekam which are performed with utmost reverence, invoking blessings for prosperity, health and well being. Morning rituals often begin with Prabhatha Pooja and Bhagavata Parayanam creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere that draws devotees into a state of devotion and reflection.
A unique feature of the Mahotsavam is its cultural and musical programs which include devotional music concerts, traditional percussion performances like Chenda Melam and fusion music shows that blend classical and contemporary styles. The festival also features elephant processions, Thalappoli and grand ceremonial rituals like Aarattu which showcase the temple’s rich heritage and architectural grandeur.
