The Cheerankavu Sree Bhadrakali Temple in Kollam is one of Kerala’s most revered spiritual centers dedicated to the fierce and compassionate Goddess Bhadrakali. During the Aswathi Thirunal Mahotsavam, the temple becomes a vibrant hub of devotion, rituals and cultural celebration drawing devotees from all over the region.
The festival embodies the rich heritage and spiritual energy of Kerala temples blending sacred traditions with communal participation.
The Mahotsavam is marked by elaborate rituals beginning with the sacred Abhishekam and Ganapathi Homam which invoke divine blessings for the devotees and the land. The Devi Bhagavata Parayanam, a recitation of the sacred scripture forms the spiritual core of the festival offering devotees an opportunity to immerse themselves in the divine narratives of the Goddess. The temple also hosts Usha Pooja and Ucha Pooja along with evening Deepa Aradhana allowing devotees to participate in prayers throughout the day.
A major highlight of the festival is the Pongala offering where women devotees gather to prepare a ritualistic sweet rice porridge as an offering to the Goddess, symbolizing devotion, community and prosperity. The temple grounds resonate with the beats of traditional Chenda Melam, Thalappoli and floral processions, creating an atmosphere of divine celebration. The festival concludes with the Aarattu procession, a ceremonial bath of the deity accompanied by colorful floats, drum ensembles, and traditional rituals symbolizing purification and renewal.
