കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ കൊട്ടങ്കുളങ്ങര ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ചമയവിളക്ക് ഉത്സവം 2026 മാർച്ച് 11 മുതൽ മാർച്ച് 26 വരെ ഭക്തിപൂർവ്വം ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. പുരുഷഭക്തർ സ്ത്രീകളായി അലങ്കരിച്ച് ദേവിയായ വീരഭദ്രികയ്ക്ക് വിളക്ക് സമർപ്പിക്കുന്ന അതുല്യമായ ആചാരമാണ് ഈ ഉത്സവത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന സവിശേഷത.

The Chamayavilakku Mahotsavam at Kottankulangara Devi Temple is one of the most unique and spiritually vibrant temple festivals in Kollam district. Dedicated to Goddess Veerabhattarika, a self-manifested (Swayambhu) form of the Divine Mother, this ancient temple stands as a symbol of devotion, tradition and living heritage.
The temple is deeply rooted in preserving age old rituals, tantric practices and the essence of Sanatana Dharma while continuing to bless devotees with prosperity and well-being.
The highlight of the festival is the world-renowned Chamayavilakku ritual where male devotees dress in traditional female attire and carry lighted lamps as an offering to the Goddess. This extraordinary ritual traces its origin to a sacred legend in which young boys while grazing cattle discovered the divine presence of the Goddess in a stone. In their innocence and devotion, they dressed as girls and offered lamps, a practice that evolved into the grand ritual seen today. It represents humility, surrender and the transcendence of worldly identity in the presence of the divine.
The festival is celebrated with the collective participation of the local regions of Chavara, Puthukkad, Kulangarabhagam and Kottaykkakam. Each region contributes to organizing processions, cultural events, and traditional performances creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere. Thousands of lamps illuminate the surroundings forming a mesmerizing visual spectacle that reflects both devotion and unity.
A major attraction is the grand Thiruvabharana procession where the sacred golden attire of the Goddess is ceremoniously carried through various routes before being adorned on the idol. The temple premises also come alive with rituals such as Deeparadhana, Kettukazhcha displays, traditional music and devotional offerings like Kottan Nivedyam.
