The Ayilyam Thirunal Mahotsavam at Plathara Ayiravalli Sri Kirathamurthi Temple, Kollam is a vibrant and spiritually enriching festival celebrated with great devotion and grandeur. This festival is dedicated to Lord Kirathamurthi, a form of Lord Shiva depicted as the divine hunter who is revered for granting prosperity, protection and spiritual upliftment to devotees.
The temple located in the scenic town of Plathara in Kollam district becomes a center of religious fervor during the festival drawing devotees from across Kerala and beyond.
The celebrations are marked by a series of elaborate rituals and poojas that reflect the temple’s rich tradition and cultural heritage. The festival begins with early morning rituals including Palliyunarthal, Nadathurappu and the Ashtadravya Maha Ganapathi Homam which invoke the blessings of Lord Ganesha for the smooth conduct of the festivities. Devotees participate in the Usha Pooja, Bhagavatha Parayanam and Nivedya Pooja offering prayers, flowers and food to the deity as acts of devotion.
Annadanam is an important feature of the festival reflecting the spirit of community and generosity. The evenings are adorned with Deeparadhana, spectacular lamp rituals and cultural programs including traditional music, dance and theatrical performances by local artists. The festival also includes processions with decorated vehicles, floats and Thalappoli processions creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with devotion and celebration.
A significant highlight of the festival is the Trikkodi Ezhuthu, the ceremonial lowering of the flag symbolizing the conclusion of the celebrations with grandeur and reverence. The Ayilyam Thirunal Mahotsavam provides devotees with an opportunity to experience spiritual renewal participate in sacred rituals and witness the rich cultural heritage of Kerala in a deeply devotional environment.
