Aswathi Mahotsavam at Ambalasseril Sri Bhadra Durga Devi Temple is one of the most vibrant and spiritually uplifting festivals in the Kollam region.
Dedicated to the worship of Goddess Bhadra Durga, the festival attracts devotees from nearby villages and towns creating a deep sense of community and devotion. The temple, known for its serene ambience and traditional architecture comes alive with colorful decorations, lighting and the sounds of devotional music making it a feast for all the senses.
During the Mahotsavam, a series of sacred rituals and ceremonies are performed daily reflecting centuries old traditions and the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.
Devotees participate in Pongal Neerattu and Manjal Neerattu, special water-based offerings and purification rituals performed with turmeric and holy water which are considered highly auspicious for prosperity, health and protection from negative energies. The festival also includes elaborate poojas, homams and special abhishekams where the deity is adorned with flowers, ornaments and traditional attire.
Cultural programs including classical music, traditional Kerala percussion ensembles like Chenda Melam and devotional songs complement the religious proceedings providing an immersive spiritual experience. The temple committee ensures that the festival maintains its traditional charm while accommodating the growing number of devotees offering annadanam and other services to all visitors.
