Thirukkodiyettu Mahotsavam at Anandavalleshwaram Sree Mahadevar Temple in Kollam is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant annual festivals celebrated with great devotion and traditional grandeur.
The festival marks the ceremonial flag hoisting, symbolizing the beginning of a series of sacred rituals and cultural festivities dedicated to Lord Shiva. Devotees from nearby regions and distant places gather at the temple to seek blessings and participate in the divine celebrations.
The temple premises come alive during the festival with the sounds of traditional instruments, devotional chants and sacred hymns. Each day begins with rituals such as Nirmalya Darshan, Abhishekam and Ganapathi Homam, creating a spiritually uplifting atmosphere. Special poojas including Usha Pooja, Ucha Pooja and Athazha Pooja are performed with strict adherence to temple traditions. The Navakapanchagavya Kalasa Abhishekam is another important ritual that holds deep spiritual significance for devotees.
One of the major highlights of the festival is the grand procession known as Sree Bhoothabali where the deity is ceremoniously taken around the temple premises accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles, nadaswaram and chanting by devotees. The Pallivetta ritual symbolizing the divine hunt of the deity adds a unique cultural and spiritual dimension to the celebrations. The festival concludes with the Arattu ceremony, a sacred ritual bath of the deity marking the culmination of the festivities.
Apart from the rituals, the festival is also known for its rich cultural programs. Devotional music concerts, classical dance performances such as Bharatanatyam and Kaikottikali and bhajan sessions are organized showcasing the artistic heritage of Kerala. These performances not only entertain but also enhance the devotional ambiance of the temple.
