Aaram Utsavam is one of the most anticipated annual festivals celebrated at Valiya Koonampayikkulam Sree Bhadrakali Temple in Kollam, a temple renowned for its spiritual sanctity and rich cultural heritage. The festival observed in Kumbha Bharani draws devotees from across Kerala and beyond to participate in a series of religious rituals, traditional ceremonies and vibrant cultural programs.
The festival begins with the Kodiyettu marking the official commencement of the celebrations. Throughout the ten day period, devotees participate in various rituals such as Puntalathazham offerings which are special offerings made to the deity by the faithful. A highlight of the festival is the Ashtamangalyathalappoli, a procession where young girls carry decorated lamps and auspicious items, accompanied by traditional music and percussion ensembles creating an atmosphere of divine energy and celebration.
The sixth day known as the Aaram Utsavam is especially significant. On this day, the temple sees grand participation from devotees with the Thalappoli Mahotsavam and Gajaraajan procession featuring elephants adorned in ceremonial regalia. Traditional melam ensembles provide rhythmic accompaniment, adding grandeur to the processions. Families and community members actively contribute to the arrangements making it a true collective celebration of devotion, culture and spirituality.
In addition to the rituals, the festival includes community feasts, cultural performances by local and regional artists and devotional gatherings that foster a sense of unity among the participants. Aaram Utsavam not only offers an opportunity for spiritual enrichment but also preserves and showcases the cultural traditions of Kerala, blending devotion, art and community engagement into a remarkable celebration of faith.
