Anayadi Pooram is one of the most vibrant and visually spectacular temple festivals in Kerala, drawing thousands of devotees and tourists alike every year to the Anayadi Pazhayidam Narasimha Swamy Temple in Sooranad, Kollam district.
This annual festival is celebrated with great devotion and grandeur in the Malayalam month of Makaram typically falling in late January and is particularly famous for the grand Gajamela (elephant pageantry) that forms its centerpiece.
Devotees from across Kerala and even from abroad come to witness hundreds of caparisoned elephants lined up in majestic formation each adorned with elaborate decorations and golden ornaments, creating a breathtaking panorama of Kerala’s cultural heritage.
The festival extends over several days and includes a rich blend of spiritual rituals, special poojas, and traditional cultural programmes such as Kathakali, Chakyar Koothu, Nangyar Kooth, Villadichan Paattu, Harikatha and classical music and dance performances that celebrate the region’s artistic legacy. The entire temple complex is beautifully decorated with plantain, coconut leaves, flowers, lamps and lights enhancing the festive ambiance and drawing in devotees who participate in prayers, discourses and communal celebrations. Throughout the festival, the rhythmic beats of traditional melam ensembles and the vibrant cheers of the crowd add to the electrifying atmosphere. The concluding day features the grand procession of elephants accompanied by percussion ensembles and fireworks making it not only a sacred religious event but also a cultural spectacle that highlights Kerala’s deep rooted traditions and the communal spirit of celebration
