The principal deity worshipped in this temple is Lord Shiva (Mahadeva). The main idol of Lord Shiva faces west. Thrikkadavoor Sree Mahadevar Temple is considered one of the 108 famous Shiva temples in Kerala, believed to have been consecrated by Lord Parasurama. The temple's legend is deeply associated with the mythological story of Sage Mrikandu, his wife, and their son Markandeya. The temple boasts a golden flag staff and a wide courtyard. It is managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board. The temple is also famous for its tusker, Thrikkadavoor Sivaraju, a prominent elephant in Kerala's temple festivals.
Festivals
The Temple has a number of festivals. The important ones are :
Arattu Festival / Annual Festival
The primary festival is the Srattu Festival, an elaborate 10-day annual celebration held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (typically February/March). This grand event attracts thousands of devotees and features a vibrant Kettukazhcha. Kettukazhcha involves the procession of enormous, ornate structures, often depicting mythological figures or towering representations of horses (Eduppukuthira) and chariots, which are brought to the temple by different karas (localities/areas) surrounding the temple. Cultural programs like Kathakali, traditional music, and drama also take place during this period. The festival culminates with the 'Arattu' (holy bath) of the deity.
Mahashivaratri
Mahashivaratri is another very important festival observed with immense devotion. As a prominent Mahadeva temple, this night is dedicated to Lord Shiva, with devotees performing special prayers, rituals, and staying awake throughout the night. Offerings and special pujas for Lord Shiva are central to the observance of Mahashivaratri here.
