Thottumkara Devi Temple Kollam

Thottumkara Devi Temple is situated on Kureepuzha Road in the Thrikkadavoor–Kureepuzha area of Kollam district, easily accessible by a short drive from Kollam city along the scenic backwater route.

 Thottumkara Devi Temple

The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy (a form of Durga/Devi), deeply revered in the locale as a fierce and protective Mother Goddess. Nestled in a family managed shrine yet embraced by the broader community, it features traditional Kerala-style architecture with a sloping tiled roof and stone sanctum. Daily rituals such as abhishekam, pushpanjali, and deepa aradhana are conducted by local Brahmin priests. Devotees believe the goddess actively safeguards her followers, and the temple committee supported by village youth groups organizes communal worship, social services, and seasonal cultural events.

Festivals

The Temple has a number of festivals. The important ones are :

Thrikarthika Vilakku
Celebrated on the Karthika star in the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam (November–December), this festival features grand lamp lighting ceremonies (vilakku) both inside the sanctum and around the temple grounds. Devotees participate in special abhishekams and offer floral prayers to invoke the Goddess’s blessings for family welfare and prosperity.

Chamayavilakku-Style Festival
Although mainly known from nearby Kottankulangara, Thottumkara Temple has recently seen a localized version of the Chamayavilakku ritual, as shared in temple live updates. During this event typically in Meenam (March–April)men don feminine attire and carry lamps in nocturnal processions around the shrine, reenacting symbolic acts of devotion for Bhagavathy's grace.
