Poovitta Vilakku is one of the most vibrant and spiritually enriching festivals celebrated at Sree Rayaramangalam Bhagavathi Temple in Kasaragod. This festival is a magnificent expression of devotion, tradition and Kerala’s rich cultural heritage attracting devotees and visitors from near and far.
The term “Poovitta Vilakku” literally refers to the ceremonial offering of lamps decorated with flowers, which forms the central ritual of the celebration.
The festival is marked by a series of meticulously performed poojas and rituals throughout the day. The morning begins with the Usha Pooja where the deity is worshipped with elaborate offerings of flowers, incense and lamps. Devotees participate in these rituals with great reverence, seeking blessings for prosperity, health and spiritual well being. The day continues with special mid-day poojas and the ceremonial lighting of the flower lamps creating a mesmerizing and serene atmosphere in the temple premises.
A unique feature of Poovitta Vilakku is the evening cultural programs including traditional performances such as Thayambaka, a rhythmic percussion ensemble and Poorakkali, a vibrant folk dance performed in honor of the goddess. Devotional recitations, bhajans and chanting of sacred texts are also integral to the celebration adding to the spiritual fervor and uplifting the collective energy of the devotees. The festival is further enriched by processions and rituals performed by local temple priests, along with community participation reflecting the deep rooted communal harmony and devotion in the region.
