Kaliyattam is a ten-day Theyyam festival held at Perumithitta Tharavad, Kottamkuzhy. This festival is a grand affair which showcases an array of Theyyams, the colorful ritualistic dance of the region.
Theyyam dance is not a single dance form and is rather a collection of about 400 dance forms each representing a mythological, historical character. During the festival, Theyyam varieties like Elayor Theyyam, Chamundi Theyyam, Panchoorla Theyyam and Muthor Theyyam are presented. The festival includes dance, mime and music and enshrines the rudiments of ancient tribal culture that attaches great importance to the worship of heroes and ancestral spirits.Kaliyattam or Perumthitta Theyyam festival is a visual treat where many Theyyam forms can be seen. This includes Elayor Theyyam, Chamundi Theyyam, Panchoorla Theyyam, Muthor Theyyam etc. The performer dons the role of heroes and ancestral spirits. Colorful costumes, body painting and trance-like performances are included in these dances. This annual festival pulls a huge crowd every year and is rated as one of the most popular festivals of the region.
