The Mother is believed to have come from a place called Oliyolakkavu and manifested in her divine form at Ajanur. The festival celebrates the power of the Goddess and is a way of offering prayers and seeking her blessings. The temple is said to be over 400 years old.

The holy weapon of the deity is taken out as a procession. llaneerattam is a special event in which the deity is taken for a holy dip in the river. Annadam or free food serving is organized for all
devotees in connection with the festival. Kalathilariyidal and Arangu Parikka/ marks the end of the festival.
