Karthika Vilakku at Sree Rayaramangalam Bhagavathi Temple, Kasaragod is one of the most revered and spiritually vibrant festivals celebrated in the region. This festival is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathi, the divine mother, and is marked by the lighting of sacred lamps, devotional rituals and cultural programs that bring the community together in devotion and celebration.
The festival holds special significance in the Malayalam month of Meenam particularly on the day of Karthika which is considered highly auspicious for offering prayers to the Goddess. Devotees believe that participating in the rituals and offering prayers during Karthika Vilakku invokes the blessings of the Goddess for prosperity, health and spiritual well being.
The festival begins early in the morning with the Ushah Pooja, followed by the Ucha Pooja. The highlight of the festival is the lighting of lamps where devotees offer lamps in the temple premises as a symbol of illumination, devotion and spiritual awakening. The sacred lamp ceremony is accompanied by melodious bhajans and devotional chanting creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere throughout the temple.
In addition to the rituals, the festival features traditional cultural programs such as Thidambu Dance, Poorakali and Thayambaka, performed by renowned artists from the region. These performances not only entertain but also preserve and showcase the rich cultural heritage of Kerala. Community participation is a vital aspect of the festival with devotees from nearby villages and towns gathering to take part in the rituals, processions and offerings.
