Aarattu Mahotsavam at Trikkannad Sree Tryambakeshwara Temple, Kasargod is one of the most spiritually vibrant and culturally rich celebrations associated with this ancient and revered Shiva temple. Dedicated to Lord Tryambakeshwara, a sacred form of Lord Shiva, the temple holds a significant place in the devotional life of devotees across North Kerala.
The Aarattu Mahotsavam reflects centuries old traditions, temple rituals and the deep rooted spiritual heritage of the region.
The festival begins with the ceremonial Kodiyettam marking the formal commencement of the celebrations. From that moment, the temple premises come alive with devotional fervor, Vedic chanting, traditional music and the rhythmic beats of temple percussion. Special poojas, abhishekams and deeparadhanas are conducted daily drawing large numbers of devotees who seek divine blessings and spiritual upliftment.
One of the most significant highlights of the festival is the Ashtami Vilakku, an occasion marked by the lighting of sacred lamps and elaborate rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple glows with rows of oil lamps creating a divine and serene atmosphere that fills devotees with devotion and inner peace. The Pallivetta ceremony symbolizing the divine hunt of the deity is another important ritual that showcases Kerala’s temple traditions and symbolic representations of dharma.
The grand finale of the festival is the Aarattu ceremony, a sacred ritual bath of the deity’s idol taken in a ceremonial procession to a nearby water body. Accompanied by traditional temple instruments, caparisoned elephants, priests and devotees, the procession is a magnificent spectacle of devotion and culture. The Aarattu signifies purification, renewal and the divine blessing upon the land and its people.
