Kshetra Mahotsavam at Thayakkavu Sree Bhagavathi Temple, Kannur is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant festivals in northern Kerala.
Celebrated with immense devotion and grandeur, this festival honors the presiding deity, Bhagavathi through a series of traditional rituals, cultural performances and elaborate temple ceremonies that reflect the rich heritage of Kerala’s temple culture.
The festival is marked by the lighting of thousands of lamps creating a mesmerizing atmosphere of devotion and festivity throughout the temple premises. Devotees participate in Ezhunnallathu, the ceremonial procession of the deity which is accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles such as Chenda Melam and Panchavadyam filling the air with rhythmic energy that uplifts the spirit of all attendees.
Special poojas and offerings are conducted daily including the worship of the sacred weapons of the deity, invoking blessings for prosperity, protection and spiritual well being. The temple grounds also host Kalamezhuthu Pattu, an intricate floor art ritual depicting the goddess, combined with devotional songs which is considered highly auspicious.
The festival also features cultural evenings showcasing classical music, dance performances and devotional singing providing a platform for local artists while preserving Kerala’s traditional art forms.
