The Thalappoli Mahotsavam at Thavam Sree Kurumba Kavu, Kannur is one of the most vibrant and culturally rich temple festivals in northern Kerala. Held annually in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, the festival brings together devotees, artists, and tourists for a series of colorful rituals, devotional performances, and community celebrations.
The 2026 edition of the festival is scheduled to take place from March 1 to March 4 promising four days of traditional grandeur and spiritual fervor.
The festival opens with the ceremonial preparations including the decoration of the temple premises and the ritualistic arrangements of the deity. Devotees participate enthusiastically in Thalappoli, a ritual procession where women carry traditional brass lamps and offerings in beautifully decorated plates. The procession is accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles and folk music, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere that reflects the deep rooted cultural heritage of Kerala.
Each day of the festival features a mix of religious ceremonies and cultural programs. Devotional songs, ritual dances and performances by local artists bring the temple alive with music and movement. Special rituals like Kalamezhuthu, the ceremonial drawing of divine figures on the floor using colored powders, are conducted with meticulous care and devotion. The festival also includes Aarattu, the sacred bath of the deity and offerings such as Tulabharam and Annadanam emphasizing the communal and charitable spirit of the celebration.
