The Mahotsavam 2026 at Sree Sundareswara Temple, Kannur is one of the most anticipated religious and cultural festivals in the region celebrated with great devotion and grandeur. This historic temple consecrated by Shri Narayana Guru in 1911 has been a center of spiritual activities and community gatherings for over a century. Every year, the Mahotsavam draws devotees from Kannur and neighboring districts who come to seek the blessings of the deity, participate in traditional rituals and enjoy the vibrant cultural programs. The festival spans eight days beginning with the ceremonial Kodiyettru, marking the official start of the celebrations, and concludes with Aarattu, the ritual bath of the deity, which signifies the end of the festivities. Each day of the festival is packed with devotional and cultural events including morning and evening poojas, sacred rituals and traditional processions. The fourth day of the Mahotsavam is particularly significant as it is managed by the residents of Thalapp highlighting the community’s active participation in the temple’s religious life.

One of the most captivating aspects of the festival is the Chenda Melam, a traditional drum ensemble performed by skilled drummers. This powerful rhythmic music creates an electrifying spiritual atmosphere and is accompanied by devotional chants and hymns. The festival also features Ganapathi Homam, special poojas, religious discourses and performances by classical musicians and traditional dancers creating a perfect blend of spirituality and culture. Devotees are also offered Annadhanam and other prasadams fostering a sense of unity and devotion among the attendees.
