The Poora Mahotsavam at Sree Mridangashaileshwari Temple in Muzhakkunnu, Kannur, is one of the most vibrant and spiritually enriching festivals in the region drawing devotees and visitors from across Kerala and beyond.
This grand celebration is dedicated to the divine goddess Mridangashaileshwari, a form of Bhagavathy revered for her protective and benevolent powers. The festival embodies the rich cultural and religious heritage of Kerala, combining elaborate rituals, traditional art forms and community participation in a unique and captivating manner.
The festival begins with the Kodiyettam marking the official commencement of the celebrations. This is followed by daily poojas and special rituals that are meticulously performed by the temple priests ensuring that the spiritual energy of the temple is heightened throughout the festival period.
One of the highlights is the Sheeveli, a ceremonial procession where the deity is taken around the temple accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of traditional instruments invoking devotion and reverence among the crowd.
Another major attraction of the Poora Mahotsavam is the Kalamezhuthu and devotional songs where intricate floor drawings of the goddess are created using colored powders, followed by devotional singing and rituals that honor Vairighathakan Bhagavathy. The festival also features Poornakuli, a symbolic ritual bathing of the deity which is performed with great devotion and grandeur.
