Mandala Vilakku is a ritualistic event celebrated during the Malayalam calendar month of Dhanu at the Oorpazhachi Kavu temple - a prominent temple that imparts historical significance to the area. The shrine has three main deities namely, Bhagavathy, Sree Oorpazhachi Daivathar and Kiratha Sunu (Vettakkorumakan) within the inner courtyard or Naalambalam, lending itself the rare significance of Shaiva - Vaishnava - Shaktheya sanctums within a single temple enclave.

The deity of Sree Oorpazhachi Daivathar is believed to be the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. Apart from this, a shrine of Thondachan is present at the upper citadel (Mele Kottam). There are several legends associated with Hindu mythology at the temple.

Pooja celebrations which is conducted for a period of 41 days beginning from the first day of the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam (November-December) and culminating on the eleventh day of Dhanu (December-January).

During this period devotees make a pilgrimage to the famous shrine of Lord Ayyappa at Sabarimala. Mandala Pooja signifies 41 days of austerities. Special prayers are made and devotional songs are rendered during Mandala Vilakku. Theyyams are an integral part of the celebrations.
