Kaliyattam Mahotsavam at Kunnumbram Maadathin Keezhil Vaira Jaatha Temple, Kannur is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant temple festivals in Kerala. Held annually, this festival is a grand celebration of devotion, tradition and community participation drawing devotees from nearby villages and far off places alike.
The temple nestled under the serene surroundings of Kunnumbram Madath becomes a hub of religious and cultural activities during this auspicious period.
The festival is marked by elaborate rituals and ceremonies that showcase Kerala’s rich temple heritage. Devotees gather to witness the traditional Vellattu performance which enacts divine stories and legends associated with Lord Vairajathan, the presiding deity of the temple. The Thiruvathira and other devotional programs are performed with great reverence providing a spiritual experience for all participants.
One of the highlights of the festival is the grand processions of the deities accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles including Chenda melam and Panchavadyam filling the temple precincts with rhythmic energy and divine ambiance. Children and local art troupes also actively participate performing folk dances, devotional music and other cultural programs that add vibrancy to the celebration.
Another significant aspect of the festival is the Annadanam, a holy feast offered to all devotees attending the temple reflecting the spirit of generosity and community service. The festival also provides an opportunity for devotees to seek blessings, offer prayers and perform rituals such as Sahasradeepam and other traditional offerings.
