The Kottiyoor Vishakha Mahotsavam is one of the most sacred and eagerly awaited festivals in Kerala celebrated with grandeur at the Kottiyoor Perumal Temple often referred to as Dakshina Kashi. This annual festival holds immense religious significance and draws thousands of devotees from across the state and beyond who come to witness and participate in the elaborate rituals and spiritual observances.
The festival is renowned for its deeply rooted traditions, unique customs and the vibrant atmosphere that surrounds the temple during this period.
The celebrations begin with Prakuzham, a preparatory ritual that sets the spiritual tone for the festivities. Following this, the temple hosts Neerazhunnallathu, a ceremonial water procession symbolizing purification and divine blessings. Throughout the festival, various offerings and rituals such as Neyyattam, Bhandaram Ezhunnallathu and star specific worships like Thiruvonam, Revathi, Rohini and Ashtami Aradhanas are conducted reflecting the rich Vedic traditions of Kerala.
One of the highlights of the Mahotsavam is the Makham day rituals including the Kalashapuja and Vaalaattam which are performed with grandeur and devotion. Special ceremonies like Thiruvathira Chathushshatam, Punartham Chathushshatam and Aayilyam Chathushshatam mark the centenary celebrations of auspicious stars adding a unique cultural and astrological significance to the event. Devotees also witness traditional processions, chanting and offerings that foster a sense of community and devotion.
