Mahotsavam is an annual festival at the Raghavapuram Hanuman Temple and is celebrated during the Malayalam calendar month of Makaram. The temple, also known as Valliya Ambalam is one of the most ancient and famous Vaishnava temples of Northern Kerala.
it is said to have been constructed in the 8th century A.D. by Udaya Varman Kolathiri and finds mention in the legendary Panchapurana.Legend has it that when Lakshmana (Lord Rama's brother) was injured during the Rama-Ravana war, Hanuman was sent to bring a certain herbal plant (Mrithasanjeevani) to cure him. As Hanuman carried the entire Himalayan mountain of Ishabhadri (since he was unable to identify the herb) with the Mrithasanjeevani, a piece of the mountain broke and fell from his hands at the place where the temple now stands. The pieces were said to have fallen in seven segmented portions one touching the other to form the present day Ezhimala Hills.

The divine presence of Hanuman and Lord Rama is believed to have existed in the place since then. Lord Rama (with his consort Sita), Lord Anjaneya, Lord Parameshwara (Lord Shiva) and Goddess Durga are the main deities worshipped at the temple.
The annual temple festival or Mahotsavam is celebrated from the 21st to 25th of the Malayalam calendar month of Makaram. During the festival, the idols (uthsavamoorthi) of Lord Rama with his consort Sita, Lord Hanuman, Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga are carried by Brahmins on their head who perform a special ritualistic dance called Thidambu Nritham.
The Thidambu Nritham with 4 idols is unique to the temple. The festival is marked by various
rituals like Thirumulkazhcha, Pallivetta (ritualistic hunting), Aarattu, Aarattu Sadya, Thayambaka etc. Hundreds of devotees throng the temple premises to offer prayers to the divine presence at the shrine. Cultural events like musicals are also organized during the festival days.
