Kaliyattam is a ritualistic dance depicting the divine supernatural belief of the region. The celebrations are believed to increase the deva-chaithanyam or divine presence of the deity worshipped. Kalakattu Illam is considered as the birth place of Sree Kuttichathan. Kaliyattam Kalakattu Illam Perinthatta Kannur Kerala The legend associated has it that many years back, when there were no child births at the Illam, the eldest member (karnavar) of the family performed a Yaga. Amidst the Yaga a child appeared, and later this child started showcasing supernatural powers. This child was from then known as "Kalakattu karinkutti shaasthan". At the Illam, Karin-kutti shaasthan is depicted as the Vaishnava (related to Lord Vishnu) and the Ucha-kutti shaasthan as the Shaiva amsham (related to Lord Shiva). Other stories related to the birth and forms of kutti shaasthan also exist.

The three-day long festival is marked by unique Theyyam performances including those of Ucha-kutti Shasthaan, Kakra Bhagavathy, Bhairavan, Karivaal, Karin-kutti Shasthaan, Raktha Chamundi, Manthramoorthi, Bootham, Pottan, Gulikan, Oorpazhachi, Vettakkorumakan etc. The start of any particular Theyyam is known as its "Purapaadu". This is followed by Thottam Pattu and Vellattam. A group of people known as Kodakar (people from Coorg of Karnataka) play an important role during the Kaliyattam at Kalakattu Illam. They have a practice of worshiping the Manthramoorthi of the Illam. Weapons like swords and dagger believed to be the weapons used by the Goddess Bhadrakali are worshipped. Every year, Komaradarshanam of the Manthramoorthi and poojas to increase the power of the weapons that are brought by them are performed. They seek blessings from the Thanthris at Kalakattu Illam and go back satisfied on the last day of the Kaliyattam.
