Kaliyatta Mahotsavam at the Kannankattu Bhagavathy Temple is a triennial event during the Malayalam calendar month of Dhanu. This is one of the famous temples in Payyannur town with a more than 500 year old history.
The name Kannankattu Bhagavathy is derived from Kannan kattiya Bhagavathy implying association with Lord Krishna. The temple is run by a trust under the Yadava community. Kannankattu Bhagavathy is the main deity of the temple. Kaliyatta Mahotsavam is marked by a variety of Theyyam performances and is a celebrated in a grand manner.

Kaliyatta Mahotsavam takes place triennially in the Malayalam month of Dhanu. It is marked by an ensemble of Theyyam performances and various rituals and ceremonies. The Theyyam of Kannankattu Bhagavathy is an important event of the festivities as it represents the main deity of the temple. Performers donned with heavily ornamented headgears, expressive make-ups and unique costumes take stage to get into the divine character or Kolam being represented. The performances are staged in the temple premises and a large crowd is usually present to witness the events.
