The Parassini Madappura Sree Muthappan Temple in Taliparamba, Kannur, is renowned for its worship of Sree Muthappan.

Sree Muthappan, who is considered a manifestation of Lord Shiva in the form of a hunter. The deity is unique in that the rituals performed there include two main versions known as Thiruvappana and Vellattam. Thiruvappana, a grand ceremonial enactment of Muthappan, and Vellattam, a minimalistic ritual where Muthappan is considered a form of Lord Vishnu aiding Shiva.

Festivals

The Temple has a number of festivals. The important ones are :

Puthari Thiruvappana Festival

The Puthari Thiruvappana festival, held on the 16th of Vrichikam, marks the first Thiruvappana of the temple year at Parassini Madappura Sree Muthappan Temple and is associated with the region's harvest season. The festival celebrates the start of the agricultural cycle and the abundance it brings. The last Thiruvappana of the temple year is observed annually on the 30th of Kanni.

Karimkalasham

During the Thiruvappana ritual at the Parassini Madappura Sree Muthappan Temple, the person conducting the ritual offers a cask filled with liquor, known as karimkalasham, to Muthappan. This offering is a unique and integral part of the ritual, performed exclusively in the Madappuras. The prayer associated with this ritual is believed to be highly effective in eliminating troubles caused by one's enemies or detractors.
