Karkidaka masa Rama temple kannur

This temple stands out for its unique consecration and rituals. Unlike other temples where Sree Rama is worshipped in a gentle form, here he is consecrated in a fierce form. The setting of the temple, surrounded by water, symbolizes a crucial moment from the Ramayana Sree Rama in his intense form after slaying Mareecha, who came in disguise to aid Ravana in abducting Sita. Due to this unique consecration, Sree Rama is also venerated here as the Ruler of the Waters.

Believed to be centuries old, the temple was once a modest, thatched structure. The current shrine was built through the dedicated efforts of local devotees. Another rare feature of the temple is the consecration of Pathala Nagam, a rarity in Kerala. This temple marks the beginning of the traditional pilgrimage route undertaken during the month of Karkidakam, where devotees visit the temples of Sree Rama, Bharatha, Lakshmana, and Shathrugna on the same day in Northern Kerala.

Festivals

The Temple has a number of festivals. The important ones are :

Varshika Maholsavam (Makaram)

The annual festival, or Varshika Maholsavam, held in the Malayalam month of Makaram (January–February), is the most significant celebration at the temple. It includes special poojas, processions, traditional music, and cultural programs. Devotees from nearby regions gather to offer prayers and seek blessings from the fierce form of Lord Sree Rama.

Durga Ashtami

Celebrated during the Navaratri festival, Durga Ashtami marks the victory of Goddess Durga over evil forces. Vijayadashami

Vijayadashami, the day of victory, is considered highly auspicious. It symbolizes the triumph of dharma over adharma. At the temple, devotees often begin new ventures or initiate children into learning through Vidyarambham rituals. Special prayers are offered for success and protection.
