മാടായിക്കാവ് തിരുവക്കാട് ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം കണ്ണൂർ | Madayikavu Thiruvakadu Bhagavathi Temple Kannur
The oracle was instructed to throw a burning piece of firewood toward the west; it landed about 10 miles away on a hill known as Matayikunnu. The Goddess chose this spot as Her abode, and a temple was built there under Her divine guidance. Madayi Kavu, also known as Thiruvar Kadu Bhagavathi Temple, is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Kali Amma in Kerala.Madayi Kavu is believed to be the oldest one built in Kerala. The origin of the temple is ancient, and the main deity worshipped here is Madayi Kavu Amma or Thiruvar Kadu Bhagavathi in the form of Maha Kali.
Madayi Kavu is the chief family temple of the Chirakkal royal lineage. The temple also shares a traditional association with the Travancore royal family. When two princesses from the Chirakkal family were adopted in 480 ME to establish the Attingal Swaroopam near Thiruvananthapuram, they carried with them two idols of the Goddess granted by Her in a dream and consecrated them at Attingal. These princesses later became known as the Attingal Ranis, who ruled the Attingal and Thrippappur estates. Afterward, Marthanda Varma of the Venad dynasty conquered the Deshinganad territory and integrated it with Venad. Until recent times, the Travancore royal family used to offer a Veeralipattu to Madayi Kavu during the Pooram festival.
The temple also shares a strong spiritual link with the Sri Muthappan Temple of Parassinikadavu. Tradition holds that the Goddess granted darshan to Madan Ezhuthachan before he installed the idols at the Muthappan temple. Madayi Kavu is revered as a powerful seat of the Goddess, comparable to Mannampurathu Kavu, Kodungallur Temple, and Thirumandhamkunnu Temple.
