Sree Madayi Thiruvarkkaattu Kaavu Bhagavathy Temple, popularly known as Madayi Kavu is one of the most revered and historically significant Bhadrakali temples in Kerala. During the Athaazha Pooja, meat, poultry, and toddy are ceremonially offered as naivedyam to Goddess Bhadrakali. Unlike the vegetarian offerings commonly associated with most Hindu temples, this ritual reflects the temple's ancient Shakta tradition, where the Goddess is revered in her fierce form and offered items traditionally connected with that mode of worship. After the ritual, these offerings are distributed to devotees as prasadam, in accordance with the temple's established customs. According to local legends, the Goddess was originally associated with the nearby Rajarajeshwara Temple at Taliparamba. As tradition narrates because the deity desired non vegetarian offerings, a separate shrine was established at Madayi, where these customs could be continued. Makaram Thalappoli Mahotsavam
Makaram Thalappoli Mahotsavam is the most important annual festival of Sree Madayi Thiruvarkkaattu Kaavu Bhagavathy Temple. Celebrated during the Malayalam month of Makaram, the festival attracts thousands of devotees from different parts of Kerala. The celebrations include special poojas, deeparadhana, traditional temple rituals, and vibrant processions dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. Women and young girls carrying beautifully decorated Thalappoli plates with lamps and flowers form one of the most significant attractions of the festival. The temple premises come alive with devotional music, traditional percussion ensembles, and cultural performances, creating an atmosphere of deep faith and celebration. Devotees believe that participating in the festival brings the blessings of the Goddess for protection, prosperity and well being.
Navaratri Festival
Navaratri is another major festival celebrated with great devotion at Sree Madayi Thiruvarkkaattu Kaavu Bhagavathy Temple. Observed over nine sacred nights dedicated to the Divine Mother, the festival features special poojas, Lalitha Sahasranama Archana, devotional chanting, and cultural programs. During this auspicious period, devotees worship Goddess Bhadrakali in her various divine forms and seek blessings for wisdom, courage, success, and spiritual progress. The temple is beautifully decorated with lamps and flowers, while thousands of devotees gather to participate in the daily rituals and prayers.
