According to legends, the site was once home to Rishis and Yogis who worshipped Lord Mahadeva in a Swayambhu (self-manifested) form.

The temple is believed to be around 2000 years old, reflecting its deep spiritual and historical significance.

The Temple has a number of festivals. The important ones are :
Ramayana Maasam
During the observance of Ramayana Maasam at Arangam Sree Mahadeva Temple, special spiritual rituals are performed with great devotion. The celebrations include Ganapathi Homam in the morning to invoke blessings, followed by Ramayana Parayanam (recitation of the Ramayana) every evening. Additionally, Mrityunjaya Homam is conducted to seek protection and health, adding to the sanctity of this holy month.
Thrikkarthika
Thrikkarthika is a traditional festival of lights celebrated in the Malayalam month of Vrischikam, often associated with the worship of Goddess Bhagavathi. On this day, devotees light oil lamps at homes and temples, offering prayers creating a serene and auspicious atmosphere.
