Thaipooya Mahothsavam is a Hindu festival celebrated annually in honour of Lord Subramanya. This festival is associated with the famous Palani Arulmigu Shri Dhandayuthapani temple. Devotees take 1 month fasting prior to the festival. Thaipooya Mahotsavam Pranava Subrahmanya Temple Idukki Kerala More than 10,000 people formed into small groups travel from the temple to the Palani temple and before this, the festival takes place. The temple is one of the top temples in Munnar. It was built 200 years before. Tribals (Muthavanmar) started the temple but still they come to worship and they are given more importance in the temple. The festival starts with Paalkudam ie, women assemble at a nearby temple (not the Amman temple but another one) with turmeric and kungumam smeared pots (sombu) filled with milk.

After a brief pooja at the temple which is sort of the Ready-Get-Set-Go, the women walk over (run rather) to the statue. Kavadiyattam is a a colourful ritual art, dressed in bright yellow or saffron robes, devotees perform kavadiyattam smear vibhoothi or sacred ash all over their body. Each one carries on his shoulder an ornate Kavadi - a huge bow, richly decorated with peacock feathers, (it is believed that the peacock is the vehicle of Sree Subramanya). And it literally means dancing carrying a kavadi. Percussion music provides an energetic atmosphere to the festival along with cultural programs and Folk arts. Food feast is provided for all the devotees.
