The Kumbhapoora Mahotsavam at Vayanakkavu Devi Temple in Kudayathoor, Idukki is a grand and spiritually significant celebration that attracts devotees from across Kerala and beyond.
Dedicated to the goddess Devi, the temple is renowned for its vibrant rituals, cultural heritage and devotional fervor. The festival is marked by a series of sacred ceremonies including Ganapathi Homam, morning and evening poojas, special Deeparadhana and the offering of Pongala, a ritual in which women devotees cook a sweet rice dish in earthen pots as an offering to the goddess.
A major highlight of the festival is the Thalappoli procession, a spectacular event where women carry traditional lamps and offerings in beautifully decorated plates accompanied by rhythmic percussion ensembles that echo through the temple premises. This procession symbolizes devotion, prosperity, and the cultural richness of Kerala temple traditions. The Mahotsavam also features Annadanam, a charitable practice where food is offered to devotees creating an atmosphere of communal harmony and generosity.
In addition to the rituals, the festival includes a variety of cultural programs that showcase Kerala’s classical and folk art forms. These include Kuchipudi, Kerala Nadanam, Thiruvathira, Kaikottikali, Vattakkali and other traditional dance performances along with devotional music concerts, orchestras and Bhakti Ganamela, enhancing the spiritual experience for all attendees.
