Uthram Thirunal Mahotsavam 2026 | Dharmasastha Temple Kattappana Idukki

The Uthram Thirunal Mahotsavam at Dharmasastha Temple, Kattapana, is celebrated annually during the month of Kumbham on the day of Uthram star (usually falling in late February or early March). The festival lasts for seven days.

The festival comes in Uthram star in Kumbam, Malayalam month. The festival is conducted based on the Lord Ayyappa. Lord Ayyappa also known as Dharmashastha, Shastha, Manikandan and Ayyanar is a Hindu deity who is the son of Mohini, an incarnation of Vishnu, and Shiva. During the festival, seven days people follow a holy vegetarian diet. The myth behind the temple was years before tribal people migrated from different parts came to this place and stayed there. Once an elephant came there and tried to attack them. At that time they prayed to Lord Ayyappa and miraculously the elephant left them. So they made a temple and started worshiping him there. So main deity of the temple is Lord Ayyappa. Sub deities are also present and they are Lord Ganesh, Lord Subramanian, Lord Durga, Lord Shiva, Lord Bhadra and Lord Naga.

The festival starts with flag hoisting ceremony which is followed by rituals like Parayeduppu, Amsham Samarpikkal, Pushpabhishekam, Kalashabhishekam etc.The procession held along with the festival adds colour to the festival. Pallivetta and Mega - Thiruvathira are the major events which are conducted during the festival.People from 5 different areas come together for the procession including various artistic cut outs, statues, people dressed up in religious characters etc. are held there. Thiruvathirakali is a dance form performed by women on the day of Thiruvathira accompanied by Thiruvathira paattu, folk songs telling tales of lovesick Parvati, the dance follows a circular pirouetting pattern accompanied by clapping of the hands and singing. Finally festival ends with Aarattu Sadhya (traditional feast) and flag down ceremony.
