The temple is dedicated to Kannagi, a revered figure in Tamil literature, particularly in the epic Cilappatikaram. Believed to be around 2000 years old, the temple was built during the Sangam period by Cheran Chenguttuvan. It was originally known as Kannagi Kottam or Mangaladevi Kannagi Temple, situated at Vannathipara.
Entry to the temple is allowed only once a year on Chitra Poornami day, during which regular pujas are performed to honor Kannagi.

The Temple has a number of festivals. The important ones are :
Chitra Pournami Festival
The temple is open to devotees only once a year during April or May for the Chithrapournami celebrations. On this full moon day, priests from Tamil Nadu and Kerala conduct ritualistic prayers at the temple. The Chithrapournami festival is a significant event, attracting numerous devotees who gather to participate in the sacred ceremonies and seek the blessings of Goddess Kannagi.
Pongala
The devotees also offer ritualistic offerings of porridge (pongala) to seek the blessings of Goddess Kannagi. This ritual is performed with great devotion and is believed to bring prosperity and well-being to the devotees. The temple, although accessible only once a year, attracts numerous worshippers who come to pay homage and partake in the sacred ceremonies.
