The Mahiravana Vadham festival celebrated in Kerala temples is a deeply spiritual and culturally rich retelling of a powerful episode from the Ramayana. This divine narrative highlights the supreme devotion, courage, and intelligence of Lord Hanuman in his mission to protect dharma and restore righteousness. According to tradition, during the great Ramayana war, Mahiravana, the ruler of Patala Loka and brother of Ravana, deceitfully abducted Lord Rama and Lakshmana and carried them to the netherworld. This act created a grave crisis in the cosmic battle between good and evil.
In response, Lord Hanuman undertook a fearless journey into Patala Loka, symbolizing the triumph of devotion over fear and darkness. Within the underworld, he encountered complex challenges designed to delay or destroy him. One of the most significant trials involved extinguishing five sacred lamps placed in five different directions simultaneously which could only be achieved through divine intervention. To overcome this impossible task, Hanuman manifested his powerful Panchamukhi form, embodying the energies of Hanuman, Narasimha, Garuda, Varaha and Hayagriva. Each face represents a unique divine quality protection, fearlessness, strength, prosperity and wisdom.
