Vishu Vilakku at Sri Perumthrikovil Temple is one of the most important and spiritually significant annual festivals celebrated in the temple. The festival is deeply rooted in Kerala’s temple traditions and reflects the rich cultural heritage, rituals and devotional practices associated with Vishnu worship.
The temple is renowned for its rare and sacred installation of Bala Narasimha Moorthy, a calm and benevolent form of Lord Narasimha, which attracts a large number of devotees seeking blessings for peace, prosperity and protection.
The Vishu Vilakku festival is celebrated with great devotion and grandeur by the temple trust and the local community. During this period, the temple premises become a center of spiritual activity with elaborate rituals, traditional temple arts and vibrant cultural programs taking place throughout the celebration. The festival begins with the ceremonial flag hoisting marking the start of the festivities and symbolizing the invitation to devotees and deities to participate in the sacred celebration.
Throughout the festival, various special poojas and rituals are performed following ancient temple traditions. Devotees gather to witness sacred ceremonies such as Ganapathi Homam, Kalasha Abhishekam, Deeparadhana and the majestic Sreebali procession. The temple is beautifully illuminated with traditional lamps especially during the Vishu Vilakku ritual which symbolizes divine light, prosperity and the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
Traditional Kerala temple art forms are an integral part of the celebration. Performances such as Panchavadyam, Thayambaka, Sopana Sangeetham, and other classical cultural programs create a spiritually uplifting atmosphere. These performances not only enhance the festive mood but also preserve the artistic heritage associated with temple festivals in Kerala.
A unique feature of the temple is the worship of Unnibhootham, a guardian deity believed to protect children and remove obstacles affecting their well-being. Special offerings such as coconut rituals and other devotional practices are performed by devotees seeking blessings for health, longevity and family prosperity.
The festival concludes with the sacred Aarattu ceremony where the deity is taken in a ceremonial procession, marking the culmination of the grand celebration.
