Observed during the Malayalam month of Kanni (September–October) on the day of Vijayadashami, this festival is one of the most cherished traditions in Kerala symbolizing the beginning of knowledge and wisdom under the divine blessings of Goddess Saraswati.
At the temple, Vidyarambham is conducted with great devotion and spiritual fervor. The ceremony, known as Ezhuthiniruthu, introduces young children to the act of writing for the very first time. Guided by priests, elders or learned gurus, children are made to write sacred syllables or their first letters either on rice grains or on a slate symbolizing the foundation of lifelong learning. This moment is considered highly sacred as it represents the removal of ignorance and the welcoming of knowledge and enlightenment.
The festival is preceded by Mahanavami rituals and Ayudha Puja, during which books, musical instruments and tools of learning are worshipped and placed for blessings. On Vijayadashami day, these items are taken back for use after being sanctified. The temple atmosphere is filled with chants, devotional songs and the fragrance of incense creating a spiritually uplifting environment for devotees and children alike.
