Thiruvutsavam 2026 at Ernakulam Shiva Temple, Kochi is one of the most prominent and vibrant temple festivals in central Kerala attracting thousands of devotees and cultural enthusiasts from across the state and beyond. Celebrated annually, this grand festival spans ten days from January 21 to January 30, 2026 and is devoted to Lord Shiva, locally revered as Ernakulathappan. The festival is a perfect blend of devotional rituals, traditional music, classical dance performances and elaborate processions that showcase the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.
The festival begins with ceremonial rituals such as Navakam and Panchagavya Abhishekam, marking the sacred purification of the temple and its surroundings. Each day features Sheeveli Melam, a traditional ritual procession accompanied by Panchavadyam and Thayambaka, which are iconic Kerala percussion ensembles. The rhythmic beats of drums and cymbals create an electrifying spiritual atmosphere, resonating through the temple precincts and captivating devotees and visitors alike.
During the festival, several cultural programs are held on multiple stages around the temple. Classical dance forms such as Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam and traditional performance arts like Kathakali, Chakyar Koothu and Kurathiyattam are presented by renowned artists and local performers adding artistic grandeur to the devotional celebrations. Evening programs often include devotional music concerts and instrumental performances fostering an environment of devotion and festivity.
A key highlight of Thiruvutsavam is the Pakalpooram and Arattu which are accompanied by elaborate Kudamattam and Koottu Vedi. Devotees actively participate by offering garlands, flowers, and other offerings to the deity seeking blessings for health, prosperity, and spiritual fulfillment. The festival also includes Utsava Bali, Athazha Pooja, and Prasada distribution which allow devotees to partake in the sacred traditions of the temple.
