Thiruvairanikulam Mahadeva Temple in Ernakulam is one of the most revered Shiva temples in Kerala and it hosts a grand celebration every year on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri. The 2026 Mahotsavam promises to be a spiritually enriching and culturally vibrant event attracting devotees from across the state and beyond. The day begins in the early hours with the ceremonial opening of the temple followed by sacred Abhishekams and homams performed by the temple priests. One of the highlights is the Ashtabhishekam, a ritual bathing of Lord Shiva’s idol with eight sacred substances symbolizing purification and devotion. Devotees also participate in Ekadasharudram, a powerful Vedic chant performed continuously accompanied by Japa creating a spiritually charged atmosphere that fills the temple premises with divine energy.

Throughout the day, several other rituals, including Vasordhara and Kalashabhishekam are conducted under the guidance of the chief priests. Annadanam is a key part of the festival emphasizing the temple’s tradition of charity and community service. In the evening, the temple comes alive with elaborate flower decorations, lamp displays and musical performances such as Panchavadyam. Special Shivaratri poojas are conducted by the temple Tantri invoking blessings of Lord Shiva. The cultural highlight of the evening is Thiruvathirakali, a traditional Kerala dance performed by women symbolizing devotion and celebration. The festival concludes with Athazha Pooja and Sreeboothabali leaving devotees with a profound sense of spiritual fulfillment.
