Shivaratri is one of the most spiritually significant observances dedicated to Lord Shiva and at Paravoothara Sree Kumaramangalam Temple in Ernakulam, the festival is marked with deep devotion, traditional rituals and strong community participation. Celebrated over two sacred days in February 2026, the observance transforms the temple premises into a vibrant center of prayer, discipline and spiritual awakening.
The celebrations begin in the early hours of the day with special poojas performed at the Shiva Lingam. Devotees gather before sunrise to take part in abhishekams and other sacred offerings seeking the blessings of Lord Mahadeva for health, peace and prosperity. Continuous chanting of the powerful Shiva Panchakshari Mantra fills the temple atmosphere creating a serene and meditative environment that draws worshippers of all ages.
A key highlight of the observance is the Prasada Oottu where devotees are offered sacred food as a symbol of divine grace and equality. The second day of the festival holds special significance for ancestral rites. From early morning onwards, Shivaratri Vaav Bali is performed dedicated to Lord Shiva as Pithru Mokshadayakan,the one who grants liberation to ancestors. Devotees perform these rituals with deep faith believing that sincere prayers on this auspicious occasion help in attaining peace and salvation for departed souls.
